A controversial event auctioning off a licensed hunt to kill elephants in Botswana over the weekend has officially been withdrawn.

A statement released by the local chapter of Safari Club International (SCI) said “Considerable interest has been shown for the hunt that was reserved for auction Saturday Evening at our Annual Dinner. We have agreed with the outfitter for them to sell it directly, at this time, instead of at auction, and so it has been withdrawn.”

The SCI also thanked everyone who expressed their support of the hunt, including the people of Botswana.

The silent auction was going to be held at the Westin on Saturday for the organization’s annual dinner, sparking opposition from the Calgary Humane Society (CHS) who asked for the hotel to re-consider hosting the event.

The CHS said it strives to lead, educate and inspire others in the compassionate treatment of animals, as it has for close to a century.
