Elephant culling divides opinion like few conservation issues. For some, it is a practical response to growing elephant populations in fenced reserves.
For others, it is an ethical failure that ignores science and the complexity of elephant societies. As southern Africa debates new proposals, the question remains whether killing elephants solves a problem or creates another.
The discussion reaches beyond wildlife management. It touches tourism, rural livelihoods, biodiversity and the future of Africa’s landscapes. Understanding both sides helps explain why this debate continues.
WHY IS ELEPHANT CULLING PROPOSED?
Supporters argue that some protected areas now hold more elephants than their habitats can sustain. South Africa’s largest free-ranging population lives in Kruger National Park, where elephants move across a vast ecosystem.
However, many smaller reserves are fenced, limiting natural migration.
Managers fear that large elephant populations can damage woodlands by pushing over mature trees and stripping bark. This can reduce habitat for birds, insects and browsing animals.
Some conservationists also argue that drought can increase pressure on food and water, leaving managers with difficult choices.
Human and elephant conflict adds another challenge.
Across Africa, expanding agriculture, settlements and fencing have reduced traditional migration routes. The result is more crop damage, property destruction and, in some cases, injuries and deaths involving both people and elephants.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates Africa has about 415 000 elephants, although numbers vary widely between regions.
DOES ELEPHANT CULLING WORK?
Critics argue that culling treats the symptom rather than the cause.
Research shows elephant families depend on experienced matriarchs who pass knowledge between generations. Removing adults can disrupt herd behaviour for years and increase stress, aggression and conflict.
Elephants also shape ecosystems.
They create paths, open water access, spread seeds and recycle nutrients across landscapes. Scientists describe them as ecosystem engineers because many other species benefit from their activities.
Opponents also question the science behind population targets.
Modern conservation increasingly considers rainfall, habitat quality, landscape connectivity and human development instead of relying only on elephant numbers.
Many experts favour contraception in enclosed reserves, habitat restoration and carefully planned translocations where practical.
WHAT IS THE FUTURE FOR AFRICA’S ELEPHANTS?
The debate has intensified after Zimbabwe resumed elephant culls, including the killing of 200 elephants in 2024, while proposals have also emerged elsewhere in the region.
Conservation organisations, including Born Free Foundation, argue that governments should prioritise non-lethal management and coexistence programmes.
Supporters of culling counter that wildlife managers must sometimes make difficult decisions to protect habitats and neighbouring communities.
They stress that each reserve faces different ecological pressures and that no single solution fits every landscape.
Perhaps that explains why elephant culling remains one of conservation’s most difficult questions.
Africa’s elephants are more than wildlife icons. They shape ecosystems, support tourism economies and hold cultural significance across the continent.
Any decision about their future deserves robust science, transparency and careful consideration of both people and nature.
