In Cabo Delgado, a citizen was sentenced to 14 years in prison for trafficking in ivory. The sentence was handed down on Wednesday in the Judicial Court of the province of Cabo Delgado.

Fernando Mohamed was convicted by the Judicial Court of the province of Cabo Delgado for attempting to sell 17 ivory tusks in the city of Pemba.

The court was unable to prove whether or not the elephants were killed by Fernando Mohamed, but according to the judge, it was necessary to apply the greater penalty, to see if the problem of the ivory trade may be solved before the extinction of the animals.

At around 20 kilograms, 17 ivory tusks were seized in 2018 at the residence of Fernando Mohamed, and according to the facts, they are suspected of being elephants slaughtered in the Niassa reserve.
